This summer and every summer, take special care to protect your
bulldog! While your bulldog may love the outdoors, summer temperatures and weather can be fatal to them. Bulldogs are not typically used to extreme heat and hence, special measures should be adopted to keep them safe and comfortable. During intensely hot days, it's advisable to limit your bulldog's time outside. Buy a cooling pad to use when you plan to be outdoors extended periods. If possible, arrange a cool outdoor environment for them. When inside, draw the curtains to block sunlight and consider running an electric fan to circulate air. Make sure there's fresh water available at all times for them to drink.
TIP: adding a bit of apple cider vinegar can help manage their phlegm levels.
If your dog needs to go outside, ensure you accompany them, limiting their exposure to the sun and bringing them back in once they've done their business. Stress is another factor that can cause your bulldog to overheat more quickly than normal. Be mindful of situations that could cause distress, like traveling, vet visits, dog parks, etc.
Observe your dog in the heat and look for signs of overheating. Listen to your dog's panting - it's their way of losing body heat. However, a pant that sounds like a 'roar' or resembles an asthma attack is a serious sign of heat distress. If your bulldog starts showing signs of severe overheating, act quickly but calmly. Cool them with cool water (not ice water), especially on their feet. Keep some lemon juice available. For those that don't know, you can squirt lemon juice into the back of the dog’s throat - it will break up the foam/phlegm in the throat. That phlegm builds up as the dog overheats. If the symptoms persist despite your efforts, it's crucial to take them to the nearest vet, trying to maintain their body cool during the journey. Remember, heat isn't the only cause of overheating - stress can play a part too. So be observant, keep your bulldog cool, and ensure they have a safe, comfortable summer. #BulldogCare #SummerSafety🌞🐶💧
